Amy Lawrence Sucks

The main problem women in electronic sports media have is credibility with men. When a TV or radio sports chick clearly is faking it...well, it’s like their orgasms: the sensitive male can spot it a mile away. Which leaves guys with a lot of post-coital sports reportage disappointment.

Take Amy Lawrence, who I keep running into on ESPN Radio’s “GameNight,” or sometimes subbing for Bobby Valvano on his otherwise excellent weekend gig. I have hated her from the very first moment I heard her faked, overenthusiastic voice come over my car radio spewing all kinds of canned knowledge which clearly revealed that she doesn’t know squat about sports. Well, I take that back: She apparently knows how to regurgitate phrases, words, and jock names that make it SOUND like she knows about sports. And she desperately puts it all out in this awful screeching voice that makes me feel like I’m listening to an obnoxious high schooler who is desperate to have someone notice her. “Hey guys, look at me!!!” Amy seems to say. Er, shout. “Look at me!!! I know a lot about sports!!!” hollers Lawrence, hammering syllables with odd and/or overemphasized inflections. Her tonal quality is wholly unpleasant, too. Get thee to a broadcasting school, Amy.

Ugh.

One day last year, near the beginning of the baseball season, Amy was doing the Saturday morning ESPN Radio show with Mel Kiper, Jr. Now I dig Kiper on football. He has a great voice, cool style, and good knowledge of the gridiron. But he doesn’t know much about baseball. Listening to him and Lawrence discuss baseball was...well, embarrassing is what it was. Both faked their way through that, a situation that exposed ol’ Mel and made ya wanna laugh at ol’ Amy. Or kick the radio.

The ABC affiliate in Nashville used to have an on-air sports reporter and anchor named Sara Walsh. I had occasion in 2005 to do a major critique of all of Nashville’s sports talking heads, and Sara, only in town a year or so, came out pretty near the bottom of my rankings. But my critique was only of her television style—she needed to pull back her intensity and let the camera do more of the work. What was never in doubt, however, was Sara’s knowledge of, and love for, sports. No one could ever say that her sincerity and authority were false, because when you’ve truly got those—and she did—then you can be a credible presence on the airwaves. Last we knew, Walsh was with the CBS affiliate in Washington, D.C.

So what I don’t understand is: Why do you hire someone like Amy Lawrence and give her all that exposure on ESPN—and force us to suffer through all that fakery—when there have to be some very good legit sports chicks out there who ought to get the gig?

I defy someone to craft a critique on Amy Lawrence that explains why she should be considered a major on-air talent. It’s awful, screechy, faked radio.

I had trouble finding a bio of Lawrence online. I had a devil of a time finding a picture of her as well. Finally I came across this picture (above), courtesy of another blog, whose creator/producer wrote an open letter to ESPN asking for MORE Amy Lawrence (??). His respondents didn’t agree with him, but one of them came up with the photo. I’m presuming that’s Amy on the right. Thankfully this should mean she won’t be doing any television. That’s still a visual medium. Isn’t it???

I think I've heard her mention an acting career at some point. I looked up her name on imdb. There was an Amy Lawrence who had a small role in Tootsie. From her voice, I thought she was younger than that, but it could be her.

Anonymous said...

Agree with you 100% on Lawrence, she's one of the worst I've heard. I would think ESPN could find someone else to fill that spot other than her.

Martin Brady said...

Hmmm...Tootsie is about 25 years old, isn't it? Can't imagine it's the same gal. Maybe Amy can get a job on "The View." They're always looking for oddball ladies. She could replace Rosie! ;o)

Anonymous said...

The photo is from a radio gig she had in Rhode Island. You can see more on the website of the station. It's www.790thescore.com. And she wasn't in Tootsie. Amy is 34 years old. Way too young to be in Tootsie.

Bravo!! I am listening to Amy Lawrence right now and she aggravates me so much that I decided to do a bit of research on her and found your post. You hit the nail on the head with her lack of sports knowledge, her fake (and annoying) ebullience, and her screeching voice. I always turn of ESPN when ever she comes on air. You'd think someone at ESPN would get the message.

Anonymous said...

As others have mentioned, I ran across this blog listening to Amy and wondering - WTF? I am listening to her fill in for Doug Gotlieb on ESPN and wonder who she blew to get that gig on ESPN? Could she or does she ever tone it down? I worked in radio for nearly 7 years and THAT is NOT what a good on-air sounds like. Pathetic.

Amy Lawrence sucks, she is horrible. C'mon ESPN, get her off the radio. I just heard her subbing on the sportsbash trying to break down Yankees baseball, WTF!

Anonymous said...

She is awful. I never have had the passion about any radio announcer to complain but I actually wrote an email to espnradio asking she never be put on the air again. As much as I hate to, I literally do change the station every time she is on. She absolutely, without question, sucks!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I can tell you everything you want to know about her PERSONALLY. She used to be a DJ (if you want to call her that) in OKC. She dated my hubby ...ummm...well she was dating him when I met him...hahahaha...the girl is a psycho freak.

Anonymous said...

To me, there's a much bigger problem with Amy Lawrence beyond her screechy voice and lack of talent. My biggest aggravation is that she is so awful at discussing the issues in sports in any depth.

She's generally teamed with someone else and thankfully not given airtime on her own, but anytime a real issue comes up, the true commentators can't develop an incisive discussion about it because her viewpoints are so remedial.

I witnessed this regarding a discussion about the fading popularity of major league baseball in urban areas. She could not fathom that the trend could have any kind sociological aspects to it and killed the possibility of any interesting conversation by insisting it was entirely due to the lack of good role models.

An unexamined life isn't worth living, or putting on the radio.

YOU ARE AN IDIOT!! AMY HAS WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A SPORTSCASTER AND YOU DON'T. THAT IS WHY YOU SPEND ALL YOUR TIME MAKING RUDE COMMENTS ABOUT OTHERS. GET A LIFE YOU STUPID MORON!!!

Yet another person who found this while googling around trying to figure out why they keep putting her back on the radio. It ruins my night when I hear her voice!

p.s. I'm a girl, so it isn't just the guys who hate her.

Anonymous said...

This is weird because I've found that Amy Lawrence is the only woman I can actually stand when it comes to sports. Her delivery is so fluid and she's knowledgeable and I can tell that she actually understands what she is saying. If you want to hate on a female for being fake look at Linda Cohn. My TV goes off when her face hits the screen.

Anonymous said...

I agree with you 100%! She has to be the worst person on radio. You can really tell she has knows nothing about sports. When she is on ESPN radio, I contemplate doing one of three things: turning the channel, driving 3000 miles to Britol to punch her in the face, or jerk the wheel into a large power pole.

Anonymous said...

I 100% agree as well. Hopefully ESPN Radio reads this and sees that its not just a few people that can't stand her, it's everybody and they should take her off the air!!!

Anonymous said...

I disagree w/the extent of hating on her that the originator of this column (& many posters) displays. I have found many of her opinions quite defensible.

I'm not a giant fan of hers, but she bugs me far less than many other ESPN GUYS (of which I'm one).

Anonymous said...

You are all wrong. Amy is knowledgeable and entertaining to listen to. That's probably why she is on the air and you are not....

Anonymous said...

The writer of this blog is like most bloggers. That is, nothing meaningful or even noticeably intelligent to say. Simply negative to all.
Here's the difference between you and Amy Lawrence. She has an excellent job (one that you would covet I'm sure)and is not a negative person, like yourself.
Maybe you will understand when you obtain a bit more maturity.
Get a life. Looks are but one aspect of a person, ya' shallow nebbish (look it up).

I heard Amy Lawrence on ESPN tonight for the first time ever. Her first several sentences about the Packer-Seattle play off game in a snow blizzard blew me out of bed to write about how she knows absolutely nothing about football, forces, weather and Ryan Grant who only broke all Packer playoff records for the most yards run (201) and the most TD's scored (3) in a playoff game. And the Packs had the likes of Paul Hornung and Donnie Anderson and others as good. Instead she said something like this--Quote: The snow storm was no excuse for Ryan Grant fumnbling on the 2 yard line and then again a few plays later. " Snow and ice and wind and a wet ball and 600 lbs of muscle pounding you is "no excuse!!!" What kind of a fool is she. What is a good excuse then? The ball deflated? or what? After dissing the rookie for about 5 minutes I was waiting for her to cover her ass by continuing with the total aspects of Ryan's play which without it, the Packers would have lost the game. It is rare to have a 200+ yard game on a sunny day much less a blizzard day. Then the fool brings on an analyst and the first thing she asks him is what did he think of Grant's errors? What? More dissing attempts. The analysts talked some gobbledegook but never mentioned Grant's record breaking game. Who the Hell are these people? I won't say anything about her treble delivery. She should at the minimum know what a football game is like in Lambeau. What a fool indeed. One questions the talent agents who brings these people evidently off the treet and onto the air to discuss a major league football game of he highest order. Phhhtttt!

I think she is close to the BEST thing on ESPN. Colin "The Herd" Freddie Coleman is horrible and that John whatever in afternoon drive is horrible. ESPN radio sucks but Amy Lawrence is close to the BEST thing on ESPN radio by far. She is the only thing intelligent on there with exception of MIKE AND MIKE. Amy is great.

Anonymous said...

I Love Amy Lawrence. I would marry her tomorrow. ESPN is so much better because of her. Thank you Amy , you are music to my ears.

Anonymous said...

The majority of you are whacko! Amy is very good and should have her own show rather than having to co-host with others. I don't agree with the one poster who said that Freddie Coleman wasn't very good. But, he sure hit the nail on the head about colon cowhair. Now if you guys want to gripe about someone that has no talent and is your basic scumbag that's who you need to post about. As a matter of fact ESPN would make my year if they put Amy in colon's time slot!!!!

Ok, so this is an old thread, and I'm a little late in posting, but here, here to you guys. I too was listening to the radio this evening, heard this aweful husky voice, and wanted to know who the hell she was.

Geez o flip! They'll let just about anyone on the air these days won't they? Oh yeah, I did the google thing to arrive here too.

And to any dissing donkeys. I currently co-host a non sports talk radio show that I'm also the producer of. Before that, I hosted my own political talk show.

P.S. My favorite women in sports reporting has got to be Baltimore's own Amber Theoharris, and the Ultimate Sports Chick, the sexy, the lovely, the talented Anita Marks (she posed in Playboy once). Never heard of them, google them and check the credentials.

hmm Amy Lawrence, ive only heard her a few times as I am typically a morning listener of ESPN radio. Although when I did happen to tune in, I wasnt so much interested in any of the debates and topics discussed because she seems to speak as if they are not her own thoughts. Maybe someone should call her out on a call and discuss in depth to see what she really knows before I can make a full accusation of whether or ot she really belongs on ESPN. so far not so good!

so you whined about this a year ago and, guess what, she's still on!
Look, ESPN is bad as a whole. But she has probably improved since you first posted this in May, 2007.

She sounds kind of like Rachael Ray and that's good enough for me. I usually can't stand the women broadcasters, but she's really tolerable.
Keep it up, Amy.

Anonymous said...

Frankly, I think she does fine. She's better than Jason Smith. He just talks and talks and talks. But it's not interesting and not compelling. Jimmy V. should hold down the overnight spot, although I doubt he wants that job. Most other overnight sports shows are better than Jason Smith. I just think he stinks.

Stumbled across this blog when looking at a post bashing mike and mike (which I totally disagree with), and let me tell you I totally agree. Listening to ESPN radio daily for the last 5-6 years has allowed me to hear the best (Kornheiser, Dan Patrick) and the worst. And I must say THE WORST I have ever heard has to be Amy Lawrence. Props to you if you can stand her voice long enough to even listen to her commentary. Unfortunately I still listen to her, simply because I love sports radio. She is too in your face, does not seem to have a deep enough understanding of all her topics. Also whomever is bashing Cowherd, should take a moment and reconsider. The guy is great radio. He is controversial, funny, and damn knowledgeable about most every topic he talks about. Sometimes he is a bit over-the-top with some segments of the show, there is a reason why he has skyrocketed in popularity and has become more visible (through TV, commercials, graduation speeches, etc.). Maybe Amy Lawrence should take some tips from Cowherd on how to put out entertaining radio.

Anonymous said...

I used to hear Amy on 790 the Score out of Rhode Island--she had a habit of calling her co-host a "jackass" if she disagreed with him--it was like she was trying too hard to be one of the guys, but it's one thing to be have an "in your face" schtick and another to be belligerent and disrespectful.

Anonymous said...

Uhhh, She sounds like she is smiling all the time; WHY? She just doesn't sound authoritative. Turn down the girliness. 'amazing job' this, 'I' that, there's no 'this is how it is' or even 'here's what remains to be seen'. She just said a division lead just changed, *Ahh-Gain!*, with her on the verge of giggling voice.

The thing is, while I thought the other people were better, I thought she was okay until she said something uninformed and idiotic and made it seem like she was in the majority of opinion.

Train her or get rid of her. Please ESPN, heed the call.

Anonymous said...

Agreed, she is terrible. Overall, the quality of ESPN radio has collapsed in recent years. Doug Gottleib is a horrible broadcaster, straight from the Jim Rome school of repeating the same observation three different ways, apparently to fill time. He also has not sense of humor, a critical trait for a broadcaster.

Scott Van Pelt, same thing. Not nearly as hip as he thinks he is, and I am not sure what he was ever accomplished that got him a radio show.

Dan Patrick's show suffered after Dibble left, and while Valvano has done well in the evening, it is hard to replace the talented Todd Wright, canned by ESPN after ten years, and now on Sporting News Radio.

Thank God, though, that they seem to have dumped Sean Salisbury, who was just an aggressive, egotistical blowhard. Trent Dilfer is a big improvement.

I have no problem with a woman hosting a sports show but please ESPN get someone who knows what and who they are talking about. It seems each show she does she says something that is strange. As long as she has been at ESPN she should know better and ESPN should know better by now.

The character, "Amy," is the baby in Tootsie. So, 26 years plus however old that kid was. Three? The girl who played Amy in Tootsie is probably younger than Amy (ESPN).

Amy Lawrence used to be on a small radio station in Woodward Oklahoma, K101. She hosted a Friday night show where she would read scores and talk to area fans. She is from back east, and really never fit in with K101. She received a reprimand for getting a little too close to some players and cheerleaders from a little town east of Woodward. If she can make it to ESPN, we all have hope.

Anonymous said...

After reading all these comments, I am surprised the woman does not have a complex. I have attempted to listen to her and usually end up switching to FSR. I still give her a chance and after seeing I picture, I could see myself sitting down and talking sports over dinner and if her voice started getting to me, I have something she could put in her mouth.

Anonymous said...

I completely agree. Not only the sound of her bs voice, but that she knows almost nothing about what she is talking about. And ESPN has done all they could to remove her from the internet. You can actually almost hear where her penis used to be.

Anonymous said...

I like Amy Lawrence, especially when she takes the place of Jason Smith overnight. You guys have too much time on your hands if you're calling out Amy Lawrence. Sounds like someone here doesn't respect the advances women announcers have made in sports. She's a wonderful radio personality with an appropriate level of knowledge. If you want to attack someone, attack those "Mike & Mike" klutches who are so insecure they announce who they are over and over: "Mike & Mike, ESPN radio" at least three times every minute.

Anonymous said...

What is wrong with most of the people here? They come across as misogynistic, male- chauvinist pigs. Amy Lawrence is an invigorating breath of fresh air. An enthusiastic, knowledgeable broadcaster, who is an absolute joy and delight to listen to. Frequently, fans complain that sports announcers/commentators come across as dull and unenthusiastic blowhards. You could never use those words in description of Amy Lawrence. She is always upbeat, sounding as though she always has a smile on her face and truly comes as a total sports enthusiast. ESPN radio/television could have her on around the clock as far as I am concerned. I never get tired of listening to her!

Anonymous said...

I am not a broadcaster...........and don't want to be a broadcaster.....but I do know that Jason Smith is just tolerable, but when Amy fills in for him, it's even worse.

Anonymous said...

She is just horrible. My biggest beef with her is that is consistently misuses words. I stopped counting the number of times she has used "penultimate" incorrectly.

Someone needs to get her a dictionary and free up an evening for her to thumb through it.

JMNOR55 said...

Amy Lawrence is symptomatic of a deeper problem, Affirmative Action. Look at most of the female sports reporters. A few of them are okay, some are just eye candy, and most of them are affirmative action tokens. Chicago has one in Jill Carlson, who's on Fox 32. She is so shallow it's pathetic. They have a younger, prettier former jock in Sarah Kustok, but relegate her to covering high school sports. Why? The NOW people would have a fit if Fox 32 canned Carlson.

Anonymous said...

Amy Lawrence is pretty bad.I don't care about her voice or looks, all I want is someone who knows sports. She has no idea. She pretends like she knows things but NEVER EVER backs up anything she says, because she has no clue. She pretty much cried on air the other night, talking about her beloved Broncos ad nauseum, after Mike Shanahan was fired. She still thought the Broncos were a Super Bowl Contender!!!! And she kept stating that this was bad for Jay Cutler because he's never had another coach other than Mike Shanahan!!!!Get real.....many QB'S have been great under different coaches...see Roethlisberger,Brees,Rivers,Favre. When she comes on the air, unless I wan't a laugh or two,I switch to Sporting news radio and Todd Wright.

She's an obvious Affirmative Action hire based on gender, and not on talent.

She makes my dogs howl and my ears bleed.

Amy Lawrence is to sports radio what Al Franken is to politics and comedy; she doesn't really know much about either, and fakes her way through most of it. Last night she was talking about Terrell Owens signing with the Bills, and apparently old Amy gets a little damp in the panties over T.O. She didn't accept so much as ONE phone call from anybody saying it was a stupid decision by the Bills. She was clearly and shamefully afraid to take on anybody with a differing opinion because she would've been beaten by a listener. Amy should stuff her mike up her ass. It would make for much better and more entertaining radio.

Anonymous said...

I agree 100% that Amy Lawrence is annoying. I also turn away from ESPN the moment I hear her voice. I'm sure she's a nice person, but she is hard to listen to.

I know her personally from when she lived in Woodward, OK. She is a very nice person and has been to my parents house several times. Some people even tried to set me up with her before I met my wife. I think she does a very good job at what she does. She is knowledgeable and professional. You people need to get a life and leave her alone. If you don’t like her, don’t listen to her! You won’t find me listening to something that I don’t like.

BTW, she looks great in a bikini!

I'm certain Ms Lawrence holds compromising pics of the ESPN top brass, for this is the sole reason that she's still given air-time. Despite a Syracuse education (mentioned this on-air), she is absolutely terrible, and is incapable of a meaningful dialogue that is not prefabricated before she signs-on.

Dave said...

One of the things that really piss me off about her and tells me that she is working with limited means it eh amount of times during any show that she is on she must state the sponsor and who 'she' is. We know and don't care who she is and who the sponsor is. She sucks.

Unknown said...

I have been saying this same thing to myself and anyone who would listen for years. It is absolutely unconscionable that ESPN continues to put this windbag on the air. Her voice is absolutely terrible, her analysis is down right comical and her radio style is an insult to any moderately informed sports fan. ANY clown that comes on here and tries to defend her instantaneously loses all credibility. Wake up ESPN, she is causing you to lose listeners. The fact that she is on the radio at any hour in a mecca like Los Angeles is truly mind-blowing.

Amy Lawrence is wonderful and entertaining and knowledgeable. No other main ESPN reporter has her knowledge of racing sports and all of the other sports. It's interesting how "Mike and Mike", Colin of "The Herd", Van Pelt, et al make gaffs constantly on the air, but these "Anonymous" windbags give them a pass because they're men. I'm a man and I love Amy's work. Methinks some of these complainers are jealous, small market male sports reporters who know they "can't handle" being on ESPN at the national level, like Amy. Hey, guys: Stuffit.

I am an Arbitron diary listener and I like to listen to Amy Lawrence. She's actually more knowledgeable about the full range of sports than I am and I readily admit it. If you tested most of these negative posters against her knowledge, they would fail miserably. Keep Amy Lawrence on the air: I especially like the interplay of knowledge and patter between her and Mel Kiper: a really enjoyable hour of sports radio; and also when she sits in for Jason Smith and Jimmy V. These haters probably also hate Michelle Beadle and Hannah Storm. Some guys never grow up.

I could not agree more. I've thought the exact same thing from the moment I first heard her. She seems to think talking really loudly, almost to the point of shouting, is the only way to express any emotion. It's insufferable. I look at Michelle Beadle on Sportsnation the same way. Listneing to her talk sports just grates on me.

There are two old men here in Denver that are the exact opposite. They are so boring and talk with so little emotion and influx, it's like listening to two old men argue over a game of chess. It's mind-boggling how some people get certain positions with so little talent.

I cannot believe what most of you are saying. Amy Lawrence is a wonderful person and has her own style which I think is refreshing to hear on the radio. She knows her sports and there is nothing fake in what she has to say. It's interesting to see how many people have something to say but it's evident that they're all listening to Amy which is exactly what her job is. To get people to listen to what she has to say. Great job Amy! Keep up the good work :)

Oh, I agree, Amy is knowledgeable, is well-prepared, is enthusiastic with an assured delivery and I enjoy her show. Her pro football recaps on Sunday were great and the way she handled the calls and the guests was superior to many ESPN men.. She knows more about sports than most men. And I would date her!

Anonymous said...

I only know her first name by listening to someone else call her "Amy". It sounds like Ammie when she says it! Then I don't really pay attention to anything she says. I just drive home faster.
There are plenty of goofballs on the radio that I listen to out of nothing more than curiosity.
If they can get the gig, more power to them!
Linda Cohn is the best, so any bad comments her way are weak!

I couldn't agree more - she is horrible (and this is coming from a woman who's in the sports media field). If I have to hear her call the NFC East "Schizophrenic" one more time I will hurl. I am stuck listening to her on weekend late evenings, as she is the only person broadcasting on all sports stations in the Washington DC metropolitan area. However, those not living in this area of the country should be glad - at least you're not subjected to Amy Lawrence AND Anita Marks...

Her voice is so nasal-ly. I don't know how they let her on the radio. And yeah, she doesn't know quite enough about sports to keep most listeners listening. Thanks for posting.

Love, Amy Lawrence. She definitely knows more about sports than I do, and I'm over 50. But the thing about her is that she's enthused and humorous. The guys are just boring and they do get their facts wrong. Especially Golic and Colin. VP and those other guys are just boring and monotone. Amy, love you girl!!

THE WORST...annoying, forced cadence and little sports knowledge has ever been displayed...

I'm an aspiring female sportscaster. I heard Amy for the first time tonight and thought she was great. Her voice and delivery is very unique. I am a Broadcast Journalism graduate, and think she is one of the best females I have heard. She stuck out because of her voice, compared to most others on ESPN who blend in with each other. She sounds different than everybody else, and because of that she will go far. GO AMY LAWRENCE!

Anonymous said...

I hate critics if you was really as tallented as you think you are you would have a brodcast on espn

RBSProds said...

I am a big Amy Lawrence fan, too! She's enthusiastic and smart and doesn't sound like she's one of the monotone male announcers. And yes, she knows "a ton" about sports. Mistakes? Check out the guys who make horrible mistakes all day long and get a pass. Amy doesn't make those mistakes. When she talks with people like Mel Kiper, Jr it makes for a real discussion not something that the production staff types up for reading.

Anonymous said...

When I hear her annoying voice I change radio stations in less than 10 seconds. She is the most gaud awful female announcer on the air. Gag her or fire give her a job off air, please!!! You can add Freddie Coleman to the off the air list too.

Anonymous said...

She tries to sound too man-ish when she talks. I hate when women broadcasters try to sound like they have a penis between their legs. Just be yourself... embrace your feminine voice. PLEASE!

Anonymous said...

Her voice is not "man-ish" at all. To me it is very sexy and sounds like she could be fun as a friend or on a date. I guess you just don't get beautiful smoky female voices like Demi Moore, Joyce Behar, Dianne Sawyer, Julie Chen, Judge Judy, and Amy Lawrence. Most women don't sound like the Goldie Hawn and Melanie Griffith little girl voices. I think if anyone on planet Earth is being themselves it's Amy Lawrence and she is well respected by the men of ESPN and her audience. The male bozo's on this site could not handle Amy Lawrence! I know I could.

While trying to catch some coverage of the AFC/NFC playoffs, I tuned to KTAR (Phoenix) and I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

The woman kicked off the segment with, "Well, we're all familiar with the Final Four of college basketball. Today it's the final four of football." My first reaction was, "Who the f*ck is this idiot.

Later she struggled to put the letters N-F-L in succession and tried to remember which Superbowl was coming up (XLIV).

Amy Lawrence easily wins the title of worst radio commentator I have ever heard. Though I didn't hear the "screech" mentioned in several posts, I did catch the unnatural cadence which makes for some bizarre listening.

That she has been at this since 2007 and appears (judging by the comments) to not have improved makes her presence on the air all the more sad.

This site is a pitiful waste of time with a lot of sexist males who are jealous. Amy Lawrence is superb. Another Internet "Hater site".

Preston Hollyander said...

I don't think she's that horrible, actually. It seems like people who post negative things about on-air personalities don't have what it takes to be one. Furthermore, why are nearly all these comments without name?

Anonymous said...

Hey, Mark, you haven't been paying attention. From Mike & Mike in the Morning to Colin Cowherd to Van Pelt all the way to Jason Smith at night, these guys are constantly tripping over their tongues. But they expect us to 'get it' when they mis-speak. Amy is one of the guys and they all do a pretty good job considerlng the fast tempo they keep. I love Amy's enthusiasm and knowledge. Cut her some slack as you are cutting the guys some slack.

Anonymous said...

Amy constantly talks, but yet says nothing. She reads stats, talk numbers, but offers little insight. Couple nights ago, she went on for twenty minutes, talking about this in an important game. She's limited in her sports knowledge. Amy Lawrence actually asked this question to Qadry Ismail, in reference of the Cowboys, Eagles playoff game. She asked Qadry, which team wants to win this playoff game more. He was floored, He said Amy both teams wan to win this game.

Her fake enthusiasm, get old. In a nut shell, she basically gives you, a hyped up Sports Flash. She never offers anything to the scores, or stats.

Anonymous said...

What the heck are you talking about? She adds plenty to the scores, with a great deal of knowledge. And Q was not floored at her question, so stop making up situations. Obviously, now that the game is over, the Saints wanted it much, much more than Manning and his receiving corps wanted it. I guess you missed that in the game too. Amy is great. Get over having a woman sportscaster on ESPN. And, NEWS FLASH, there are many more sportscaster women on the way to the top.

Anonymous said...

Yeah her huskey "I'm one of the guys" voice is very annoying.

This is strictly a "Hater Site" and there are other hater sites against Scott Van Pelt, Doug Gottlieb, Mike Tirico, Tony Kornheiser, Michael Wilborn, and Colin Cowherd even has 2 hater sites. Martin Brady is a person with suspicious motives: maybe he lost out to Amy in a job interview (Martin has been receding from larger cities to smaller markets: Washington DC to Chicago to Nashville: does that give you a hint about why he "HATES" Amy Lawrence?). Or maybe she refused to date him (let's 'face' it, he's not that good looking)? As far as Amy goes, I'd date her anytime!
Martin you're a Loser; what's next for you, Guam?

She is just horrible. Nothing to do with her being a female, just the fact that she has no idea what she's talking about and reads everything off of a paper.

Anonymous said...

I'm surprised by all the negative comments about Amy Lawrence on ESPN.

Locally she is on the radio late in the evening. I enjoy listening to her and have no complaints about her voice or delivery.

As a male I have no problem with a female broadcaster. All I ask is to be knowledgeable and have a point of view.

Rick in Dallas said...

Amy Lawrence does indeed SUCK. Her voice is indeed awful, and her sports knowledge is absolutely canned. I can't stand that bi*%#! Why is she employed at ESPN? I'll tell you why.

It's because she's apparently the most qualified WOMAN they could find. This is what we are dealing with in these days and times. Minorities, including women in sports, are hired based on a quota type system where companies keep a certain number of minorities on the payroll to stay "diverse."

I am NOT suggesting that minorities are less capable of being good employees. But the simple truth is that companies must not be perceived as having any degree of racial of gender based bias.

This makes the hiring system one where they basically say; okay, we've got to hire X number of minorities, so let's find the most qualified latino, or black, or woman or whatever to fill this position.

If they just hired based on qualifications a woman would never be hired by a sports radio station because all of the sports they cover are played by men. How often do you hear ANYONE on ESPN Radio talking about women's basketball? Never. Every minute of every hour of every day is spent discussing men's sports, be it football, baseball, basketball, or whatever.

The most we can hope for is that Amy will eventually be replaced by a woman with a less gut wretching voice.

HA! Rick in Dallas has finally played the "minority" card and mentioned the "quota" word. Well, Amy Lawrence has a Masters Degree in Radio & TV, is an experienced national radio announcer, is an experience play by play commentator, is an experienced interviewer. Amy is an enthusiastic announcer who knows more about sports probably than all of us men put together, especially Martin in Nashville. Go figure. AND Amy has a sexy voice, but the real men here already knew that!

Have you ever seen the Seinfeld episode where the lady comes and laughs at Jerry during one of his stand-up routines? Jerry is so infuriated that he goes to her work and starts heckling her. The point is, how would you anti-Amy Lawrence proponents feel if someone started an Internet blog about you and your ability in the career that you've chosen? Amy's work is exposed to a national audience (which, by the way, as someone who also works for the national media, isn't always as glamorous as it seems), which means that many, many more people observe her work than most other professions. Amy is a friend of mine and is a God-fearing, kind, sincere person. Instead of considering Amy's words on-air, consider the Lord Jesus Christ, who said, "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged..." (Matthew 7:1)

Why doesn't ESPN radio give Amy Lawrence prime assignments, such as reporting from the Olympic games sites or from pro sporting venues? Amy is too talented to be sitting behind a desk in Bristol, CT.

Why do you people even bother giving this dummy the satisfaction of complaints?
Just do like I do, anytime I hear her filling in for Jason Smith, etc. I turn the dial to Coast to Coast with George Noorey.
End of story, Amy sucks, period!!!

Amy Lawrence rocks. The past week sitting in for Jason Smith on ESPN All Night was really great sports radio. And like Jason, she personalizes her commentary that adds so much more than just straight sports stories. Her interaction with Beano Cook and Mel Kiper, Jr. was very enjoyable. And the secretly recorded singing was hilariously funny. We need to get her work on a Podcast.

I'm a man and I enjoy Amy Lawrence very much. I don't feel threatened by her. Amy Lawrence is more than you jealous junior-grade sports announcers will ever be. You're stuck in Podunk and she's at the top of her game at ESPN. Amy Lawrence has lots of fans and you guys are just jealous because a woman has gone so far your achievements. Amy is there because she deserves to be there: she has the education and the experience. If you don't like it, tune in to Fox Sports.

Or, are you looking for a forum such as this because you secretly feel that Amy Lawrence really does SUCK and want to see how many people share how you feel?....Hummm.

Amy's great and we're an Arbitron Radio Ratings family, which means we represent millions of listeners where ever we tune the dial and Amy and her broadcasts and podcasts get first preference from us. And yes, we single her out for special praise in our diaries, along with Jason Smith, Colin, and Jim Rome. And, seriously, the pictures you use are of the BRITISH Amy Lawrence: You can't even get the pictures straight. Somebody sucks around here and it's certainly not the multi-talented Amy Lawrence.

Love Amy Lawrence's work. She's a refreshing change from the testosterone drone of ESPN male announcers like Gottlieb and Van Pelt. Love this girl's enthusiasm and sports acumen.

Anonymous said...

Hey Arbitron Radio Ratings family, you're the one that's got it screwed up. The picture is in fact the ESPN radio Amy Lawrence back about 10-12 years ago when she was much younger and thinner. That's no Brit. For every million listeners you represent, there are twice as many radio listeners who hate Amy Lawrence. She's not even an ESPN official employee. She free lances which pretty much means, ESPN subcontracts her because she's not good enough to keep around and put her on the permanant payroll. Now who sucks.

Anonymous said...

Amy Lawrence is wonderful! I'm a big fan of hers. I wonder about these hater sites against Amy, Doug Gottlieb, Van Pelt, Mike Tirico, and Colin Cowherd has 2 such sucky hater sites. I guess it's a sign of success when the haters come out against you. Hate on, you haters.

Anonymous said...

ESPN must pay someone to write positive posts about Amy Lawrence and Colin Cowherd. They are that bad. Impossible to listen to.

Why are they still on the air? ESPN doesn't have to pay them much (relatively speaking). That's why most of the decent ESPN Radio broadcasters have left. ESPN Radio won't pay for talent. Dan Patrick, Tony Bruno, Chuck Wilson etc., are all gone. They've been replaced with garbage.

ESPN Radio has so many stations and so much market power, they think they can make you listen to garbage like Amy Lawrence and Colin Cowherd and still make money while paying nothing for "talent." They don't care how bad the "talent is. They just want to make money on ads and much, much, more importantly, cross promote their real money maker: TV.

Amy Lawrence. I really do not care what she looks like. She is eager and tries hard but comes up way way short. All I do when she is on is turn on Fox Sports Radio here in Albuquerque.

Sorry Amy it is not your gender. I have heard a lot of male dopes worse than you. But you have to LEARN about the GAME, whatever it is before you talk about it. A word of advice ,do not be afraid to say something stupid if you learn.

Amy Lawrence sucks? Apparently you haven't been listening to the asshole she substitutes for more often than not. (Jason Smith) If you're going to dedicate an entire webpage to dismantling someone's reputation for something that they do very well, maybe you should reconsider an go after someone that has NO right to be on the radio in the first place. (again, Jason Smith comes to mind )

And her fan club is growing. Close this rag site down.

All of the ESPN hosts have hater sites! Colin Cowherd has at least 7 hater sites. The more hater sites, the merrier. They don't care b/c it means they matter. Amy Lawrence has been there forever, is the only female host, does a great job, has a huge following and they aren't letting her go. The only other female is sports break announcer Christine Lisi. They aren't letting either of them go. Dream on, hater site.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure Amy Lawrence is a decent and hard-working lady, but it's almost impossible not to turn off the radio or switch over to Fox Sports Radio, when she's on the air. But then again, you could say that about most of the on-air radio talent for ESPN. Bob Valvano and Jason Smith are the only ones worth listening to.

Anonymous said...

She's very self centered. She has a "better than you" attitude if you ever worked with her you would know. Not pleasent to be around. The whole radio/sports thing consumes her and pretends to be what she's not. Christians should live as what is preeched and believed in the teachings. I'll leave it at that.

Anonymous said...

Why is it that when a woman is confident, she's 'self centered': especially the only woman in a testosterone-laced environment of jocks and radio male divas'? Amy's very respected at ESPN and been there over 6 years. If you really knew her, you would not be attacking her Christian beliefs. She takes time off and goes on mission to South America each year to help the poor: that's living the Christian message. Those who know her, know she's a strong Christian believer, who spreads and lives the words of Jesus. "'The measure by which you measure, will be measured against you". Stop judging! Hope to see you help feed the poor this Thanksgiving at the local shelter. "I'll leave it at that", also.

Anonymous said...

So just feeding the poor is what makes you Christian and going to other countries defines a person as good? It should be the way you treat those around you every day which signifies the following of the word of the lord. A person can be confident without being self centered. Everyday actions are what earns respect, not the occasional do good actions. She deffinitly doesn't display it in her daily actions. She's judgemental of others and quick to ridicule if they have a way or believe different from hers. She uses people and dismisses their feelings. Perhaps this may be why she walks this world "alone" among the crowds portraid as her fans and friends. I agree that she has the "better than you" attitude. You begin to feel sorry for her for about 3 seconds and then she does one of her usual pissing off antics and you go right back to hating her.

Anonymous said...

Er...yes, that's exactly what makes us Christians AND in the end will determine who gets into heaven. Look it up to get the final scenario of this world and this time:

Matthew Chapter 25: verses 31-46.

So yes, Amy Lawrence is a humble Christian who cares about people and helps them. Please, come join us.

Amazing how many like me are here solely because they wanted to see what this honk looked like, and then this site got the top spot on Google. There are people paying tens of thousands for 1st spots on Google:):) Obviously not for Amy!!! And while I listen, and I'm assuming there are some fresh eyes, she kept my attention because she promised a take on Favre and TextGate and the slap on the wrist punishment. I wanted to see what a female sports "journalist" would have to say. Well I'm still waiting after over an hour, and 2, friggin 2, Mel Kiper segments. Teasing is one thing, but when you are doing a 3+ hour show that is just bad broadcasting. And for the first time really listening to her I realize that I don't care about her take if its anything like her lame arguments in favor of the NCAA. and I quote, "It's like the American justice system, its not perfect but it's the best we can get" Wow!!! I only listen to radio in the car so I could care less, but ESPN is lucky they are about the only real Monopoly left, because the on air talent and general coverage on TV and radio is pathetic. But I guess it beats the last 5 minutes of your local newscast we had until ESPN, so they are going to get the ratings, and those ratings for a personality or the organization in general signify nothing but the popularity of sports in this country and thru out the world. And there is a god, and now Amy is talking about Favre, and now I love the gal because she is a broad who isn't about this little sexpot who has used sex for every advancement in her "career" crying victim. Right on Amy, you still are pretty horrible, but my initial read on you was correct. No bullshit Bull Dyke, and there's nothing wrong with that!!!!

Funny, none of your heroes are calling for her dismissal, they're too busy and respectfully chatting her up.

I can't stand listening to a freaking woman tiring to commentate on football. 99.9% of the women on ESPN have about as much experience on the field as Pee Wee Herman. I've played college and semi-pro ball as a D-lineman and would love for one of these bimbos to line up in front of me for one play! "IF" they can get up off the ground to get ready for another lick, I might change my mind, because they might now understand what football is all about, but until then....GO INTERVIEW AN ICE SKATER!

And for the big mouths that want to call me a Chauvinism, F'u and go sow a baby doll dress!

"Bimbos"? Have you met any of these nice ESPN women? If so, you would not use that word. They are all NICE! And if you sent an e-mail about "tiring to commentate" to ESPN they wouldn't hire you for sure, Bubba. Jealousy is such a bad thing. These women at ESPN have more experience in and with sports than you do, Mr Ex-Lineman. Amy is a wonderful person who has lots of fans and ESPN knows it. Have a great day, brother!

Hmmm...I've heard Ms. Lawrence on ESPN a fair number of times-especially during the baseball season,as she's the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball host, and she seems
OK,but not particularly captivating or off-putting as a
personality.(Though her voice is something of a teen-age girl's
screech and she should work on her
presentation that way).As an Afri-
can Canadian man,I hesitate to mention this, but since its 1979 in-
ception,ESPN has been a lads' soci-
ety in demographics and-sexist-be-
haviour that perhaps Ms. Lawrence's presence is about ESPN'S attempt to woo women listeners.

I love her and I love her voice. The fact is that the ones who generally are the most enjoyable to listen to don't know a whole lot about sports, like Amy Lawrence and Jason Smith, but they've got the gift to gab. I routinely turn off the annoying jason "all nite", the overly oppinionated kowe kowherd who can not talk about more than one opinion he has a day. repeating himself over and over for 3 hour wiht the excuse people only listen for 20 minutes. truth he can't think beyond his boxes. Amy is always enjoyable and I find her approach genuine. I guess all you women haters are gay or in love with yourright hand.

yes she is terrible, based on pure performance she does not merit her position

All she does is babble the headlines you get on Yahoo.

She hangs in there and has guts and spirit but just does not know anything about sports.

If she did some homework like the big boys and girls do she would maybe make it.

I stumbled on this blog while searching the Internet to see if anyone else disliked Amy Lawrence's radio persona and broadcast style as intensely as I do. In the words of Larry David, everytime she opens her mouth, brace yourself for a jetstream of bullshit. Or just change the station, which is what I usually do.

Love Amy Lawrence. After listening to guys (no offense, some like Jim Rome are good) with their testosterone laced opinions, it a pleasure to hear Amy Lawrence on ESPN.

It is October 31st, 2011. Amy Lawerence still sucks really hard at radio. In fact she sucks so bad that I remember a month ago- pulling into my driveway late at night after working and she was filling in for Vallvano. I sat in my driveway because what was on the radio was so compelling: they were playing "Hit or myth" with the producer and Amy; the producer asked what the chances were that the state of Wisconsin would get a World Series and a Super Bowl in the same year. He was referencing the Brewers because the Packers already won a Super Bowl in February. She went on and on rambling about Aaron Rodgers and the Packers and parity in the NFL until the producer chimed in and said- "well I was talking about a World Series." She stumbled over her words and was clearly flummoxed because she couldn't figure out what team (the Brewers) he was reffering to. Ohhhhh it was funny.

Couldn't agree with you more. Her delivery is forced, and she sounds like she's trying way too hard to be important. I'd bet my paycheck she got her job because of one of two reasons: 1) she knows someone who could see that she got hired, or 2) she went to school at Syracuse. I live in Seattle, and for most folks east of the Mississippi this probably won't resonate, but ESPN is overwhelmingly Eastern in outlook and style. There's almost no on-air talent (on radio and especially on TV) from the West. Lawrence having gone to a school in New York - a school that also has a well-known communications dept. - was a sure thing for ESPN.

She just went on a rant against Bill Obrien bashing him for stating that winning cures a lot of ills referring that it was disrespectful to the victims of sexual abuse. I am married to a surviver of sexual abuse and it has made my life a living hell but I know he was referring to the explayers and such who were pissed off at his hiring.

Amy Larence is truly an idiot whose voice is intolerable.

She just went on a vitriolic diatribe about the Bill O'Brien regarding his statement that winning cures alot of ills or something to that effect claiming it was disrespectful to the victims. Hey DumbAss: He was speaking to the explayers who were unhappy with his hiring!

Jealousy, jealousy and jealousy. That's what it is . Get a life asshole . She is better than a lot of guys including u. Love u amy.

So funny to come here and read comments about Amy Lawrence who is nearing completion of a decade of excellence at ESPN. You guys must be a lot of frustrated small town sportscasters who will never achieve what she has done. Instead of posting your hateful comments (the screen name "Living In Hell" says it all) up your game and try to achieve what she has done thru hard work. Have a great day!!!

Pbth. She sucks, So bad that we have to see if someone else feels the same, and vent. It's ok, I'm not going to her house, just writing a post, I have a life, this doesn't consume me... I just hate listening to her and change the channel whenever she comes on, I'm not the only one.

Does ESPN even look at their ratings? Thousands upon thousands of radios have to be changing stations the moment she comes on air!
Its redundant to keep saying here but ... she has the most awful voice, annoying personality, and zero knowledge of sports. C'mon ESPN don't try to make us listen to this wanna-be. Just play Sportscenter all night for God's sake!!

I enjoy Amy on late night radio. She is fun and takes a different approach to her opinions: they are real. She is also a good commentator. She knows her stuff. How can I email her?

Geez I so glad I found that thread. Im sorry, but yes, she is terrible. I say the same about men, but she brings up such weak points and when she gets cornered she repeats those same points over and over and over with her fake enthusiasm. She plain out sucks.

Another sports media character I also hate is pig faced francesa(sorry for spelling). He is a pig too all his listeners. Cuts then off if they challenge him and never admits he's wrong. Another piece of garbage in this world that thinks his crap doesn't stink. Ugh. Just talking about him makes my blood boil seriously. I hope all the NFL players he's ever bashed catch up with him. Tough guy on the phone.

You people don't know a good knowledgeable personality when you hear one. I have listened to Amy Lawrence on a number of occasions and find her knowledge of sports to be quite impressive. Thanks ESPN.

The one thing I can disagree with you on is the fact that she's a cutie pie. :)

And I really like her voice.

Wow, I can't agree more. She is horrible.
Whenever she comes on off the radio goes. She is so annoying it make my head hurt. Its like she has a script in front of her when she talks and just mouthing her supposed knowledge of sports. Its really hard for me to believe that Bobbie V would let her fill in for him. Hey and I'm a woman and that voice drive me crazy. I'm sure ESPN knows she suck but they may feel they have to meet their quota for female sports announcers.

Hey,,it is ESPN. Just a typical liberal, politically correct business. Left wing hacks. The ONLY reason these dumb broads even 'work' at espn is because the libs who run this network deem it important to have the female quota met. Most are lezbos no doubt. All have high pitched, screeching, estrogen induced voices. They all spew such trite. Get the broads off of tv and radio. If you are going to allow the broads to do sports,,,,let them do womens tennis or womens golf. Keep the broads out of men's sports. (except for the cheerleaders)

I can't say I absolutely hate her, but I'm definitely not a fan. Like many said, there are many other women much better suited for her job. You know who would be great on game night instead, Sarah Spain (ESPN 1000 in Chicago). That would be a show I could really listen to. She weird, funny, knows her sports, and is drop dead gorgeous (not really a necessity, but it sure is a nice bonus). Bring us more Spain!

Lawrence is a lezbo ugly broad. ESPN has a quota they need to fill....so the heshe is the one they chose. A truly horrid voice. Ugly ugly ugly. ESPN like the ugly broads. Good for Erin for packing her bags and getting out of the left wing, politically correct ESPN environment.

Fluid? She is the exact opposite. Her choppiness drives me absolutely nuts. There has got to be someone better to fill the late night slot. For god sakes, I would even take Gilbert Godfried over her!

I think Amy Lawrence is HOT!!! I cant find much on her , she s a very good sports analyst
